Bible Teaching on Hell

Many of us prefer not to think about hell, however, the Bible clearly teaches that hell is where the lost will be forever, throughout all eternity. It is a place of torment, there is no rest there. Jesus gave an invitation to everyone to come to Him, accept His pardon and He will give rest and peace. Heaven is a place where the redeemed will spend eternity, praising God.

The Bible clearly teaches the dreadful reality of an eternal lake of fire. The sinner is warned that time, which is God-given, be used to escape its terrible damnation.

Description of Hell

It is a lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14) It is “the blackness of darkness for ever” (Jude 13). “And to him was given the key of the bottomless pit…and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace” (Revelation 9:1-2).

“The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone…And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night” (Revelation 14:10-11).

Where Is Hell?

The Scripture indicates it is somewhere beneath, down, away from God. “The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath” (Proverbs 15:24). “And thou…shalt be brought down to hell” (Matthew 11:23). “There is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us that would come from thence” (Luke 16:26).

The Way to Hell

“Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat” (Matthew 7:13). Firstly, it is easy to find; “for wide is the gate.” Secondly, it is not difficult to stay on it; “broad is the way.” Thirdly, it is thronged with travelers; “and many there be which go in thereat.”

Who Will Go?

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalms 9:17). “The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know of God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8).

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8).

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” (Matthew 25:41-46).

What Will the Lost Do in Hell?

They will weep and gnash their teeth (Matthew 22:13). They will look upon the consolation and happiness of the redeemed in heaven, knowing that they will never be relieved from these unspeakable torments. “Cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 22:13). “And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame” (Luke 16:23-24).

Will God Punish The Sinner?

“God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell…bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished” (2 Peter 2:4-5, 9).

Yes, every sin and transgression will receive its reward.

If you are an unbeliever, or dishonest, or profane, or lewd, or a slave of lust and appetite, or a scoffer at the truth of God, “How can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (Matthew 23:33). If your soul is obsessed with the pursuit of gain; if you are a man of wealth without the true riches of God; if you are a passenger on the voyage of life without prayer, without concern for your immortal good, your God, or the eternity before you-Hear! “Hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it” (Isaiah 5:14).

If you have wanted to be a Christian, lingering many years on the margin of the kingdom, looking through the gates, but never quite ready to enter in, intending, but never performing, often wishing, but still postponing, hoping but without right to hope-this warning is to you: “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation” (Hebrews 2:3).

If you are a Christian who has forgotten your covenant promises, and have started to leave the place of sin and death, but have hesitated, stopped and looked back-“Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32 ). Do you not see that the sinners’ “judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not (2 Peter 2:3). This message comes to you: “What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not” (Jonah 1:6).

Oh, you who are unsaved, turnabout with all haste. “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
